afternoon spent in the tranquil ambience of this delightful 17th
Century country house.
Afternoon Tea at Lainston is served in
our Drawing Room or (weather permitting) on our pretty terraces in
glorious sunshine!

Guild
We are really delighted that Lainston House Hotel has been
accepted into the Tea Guild. Membership to this prestigious
organisation is the ‘Michelin Star’ of the tea world and is a
much sought after honour!
In April 2009, we are proud to have been
awarded an Excellence Accolade at the Tea Guild Awards for
‘consistently high standards of tea-making, evident in the care and
attention to detail with which they prepare and serve afternoon
tea’
A quintessential
English tradition
Afternoon Tea was not introduced to England until the 1840’s.
Anna Seventh Duchess of Bedford is given credit for beginning the
tradition.
During the long hours between English luncheons and the late
English suppers she would get a sinking feeling. So she would send
to the kitchen to have a pot of water, bread, butter and cakes sent
to her boudoir where she would brew the tea and appease her
appetite. She is said to have shared her ideas with friends and by
the mid 1840’s afternoon tea had become a widespread social
event.
Here at Lainston House, the team in the pastry
are proud to present our very own version of this wonderful
tradition.
Something about Tea
Tea is the most consumed beverage on Earth after water. While
tea is ubiquitous and can be mass produced, the World's great teas
are as outstanding in taste as the finest wines and rarest
whiskies. But unlike wine, tea will never give you a hangover or
leave you feeling thirsty. It is delicious, hugely varied with a
taste to suit any mood and it is one of the richest sources of
antioxidants you can find.
