Wine Experience

Dear Guest...

I have created this wonderful list of wines for you to enjoy - both classic and indigenous grape varieties from around the world. My selection covers 80% old world wines and 20% new world wines.

I started my wine experience in April 2005 at the Vineyard at Stockcross and then moved up to London before joining the team at Lainston in December 2006.

Head Sommelier, Karin Mätschke

Wines of the month by grape variety...

This is a small selection of excellent wines hand picked from the wine list by our Sommelier to enhance your dining experience.

White

135 Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons, Vincent Dampt, Burgundy, France 2006: £51.00

I discovered the wine maker on a trip to Burgundy last year. I really learned a lot on this trip. Here the soil has an important effect on the wine. In the best sites, it is limestone overlaid with a layer of Kimmeridgian clay, which is very rich in marine fossils. Dampt`s vineyard is directly located within this area. For me it was magnificent to see the different parcels and the difference in soil. The young wine maker produces a mineral and briny wine with remarkable vivacity.

112 Grűner Veltliner, Lamm, Schloss Gőbelsburg, Kamptal, Austria 2006: £59.00

I am very proud that I can present you with a stunning example of my neighbour country Austria’s most important white grape varieties. Austrian wines are currently enjoying a well-deserved renaissance. Kamptal – its name is derived from the Kamp River and it is one of Austria’s largest wine-growing areas. Grüner Veltliner has a reputation of being a particularly food-friendly wine. It is a full bodied, complex wine with racy acidity and astonishing minerality. The vines grow on deep loan and loess.

Red

351 Negro Amaro, Montepulciano, Candido, Duca d'Aragona, Puglia, Italy 2000       £49.00

Italy is one of my favourite wine countries. I love the relaxed atmosphere and the healthy style of living. I have been several times to Italy, but never to Puglia. This is the home of our Head Barman Marco. He introduced me to these unique grape varieties Negro Amaro and Montepulciano. Puglia has a mediterranean climate. There is a long ripening resulting in a strong development of aromas, richness and concentration.

490 Tempranillo, Lealtanza, Reserva, Rioja, Spain 2001: £99.00

Rioja is certainly a favourite location and wine for me.  I visited only last year and was amazed by the quality of wines and passion from the locals. This particular winery (known as a bodega) is situated in the heart or Rioja Alta. This area's wine is Riojas fullest in terms of fruit and concentration and can be velvety smooth. Bodegas Altanza is already considered to be one of the top and most innovative producers of Rioja. This Reserva is a more structured wine made from the Estate’s finest grapes and spend 42 months in new French oak. It is a round and complex wine with well-balanced tannins. The wine was produced in a limited series.
